The teacher accreditation landscape is changing as the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES) continues to work on implementing the Teacher Accreditation Act and recommendations from the Great Teaching Inspired Learning report.
Three new key developments include:
- bringing early childhood teachers into the accreditation framework from 2016
- the accreditation of pre-October 2004 teachers by 1 January, 2018
- regulatory framework for Teacher Accreditation Authorities (TAA)
What this will mean for me as a teacher in NSW?
For beginning teachers or those already in the accreditation framework:
- continue the processes outlined by BOSTES and CEDP as you move from
- - Graduate level to Proficient teacher level
- OR maintain your Proficient accreditation over each cycle
Maintenance of accreditation at Proficient level currently requires teachers to complete a minimum of 100 hours of professional learning over the cycle including 50 hours of courses registered with BOSTES. Teachers additionally have to complete a report reflecting on how they have maintained their Proficient accreditation over the cycle.
For teachers employed before October 2004:
- visit the BOSTES website and familiarise yourself with the requirements and schedules
- CEDP will soon be providing advice to all teachers on the specific information and actions that will be needed for teachers to come into the scheme by 1 January, 2018.
- pre-October 2004 teachers should also begin to familiarise themselves with the APST which is foundational to the accreditation process. Teachers brought into the accreditation framework by this new process will NOT need to upgrade their teaching qualifications.
These policies and procedures apply to temporary and permanent teachers whether they work on a full time, part time or casual basis.
Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher accreditation
Teachers who meet the criteria are eligible to apply for the voluntary accreditation levels of Highly Accomplished or Lead Teacher. These voluntary levels recognise the practice of exemplary teachers who mentor and lead others in improving their practice. The process of applying for these levels include referee reports, external observers and collection of appropriate evidence.
